Abstract. The author analyzes the peculiarities of one of the key metaphorical oppositions up – down as an axiological marker in the process of evaluating the reality. She describes the design features of the oposition's semantic space, and the special attention is paid to its symbolic level which is important for understanding complex axiological processes. On the basis of data from modern explanatory dictionaries and texts of Russian National Corpus, the author distinguishes some regularities of using up – down antonymic dyad for the enterpretation of emotional, ethical, social, religious, gnoseological events in the life of people and society. The author comes to the conclusion that the studied binary opposition fits into the general system of world oulook coordinates, consisting of spatial, temporal, parametric, taste, color and other opposites that help a person to orient in the world.

Key words: axiological opposition, symbolic meaning, binary opposition, metaphor, antonymic dyad, semantic structure, semantic space.
