Abstract. The article considers the mandative elements that the business language of the 18th century inherited and acquired as specific clerical means, along with the bookish ones, including some special grammar forms and lexemes, as well as linguistic formulas that structure the document. The analysis was carried out on the mandative formula "ruku prilozhil" functioning in the business language of the 18th century. The scrutiny has enabled qualifying it not as a disappearing element but as a normative means of the developing clerical language style. The signing formula in the frameworks of mandative tradition rejection is noted to have retained actuality, adapted to the new conditions and was functionally reinterpreted. It became a mandatory component of the document layout (namely, petitioning, judicial-investigative and transactional-contractual ones) drawn up by private individuals. The contents of the documentation prepared by the officials were sealed with their signature, including their name, surname and position. The research revealed how the formula assists in identifying the varieties of documents ambiguously interpreted by the linguists. The conducted comparative study of the regional reports revealed the differentiating capability of "zarucheniye" formula. Its inclusion in the document layout marks the functional orientation of the texts formally related to the same genre. The conclusion highlights that in the 18th century, the business language reformers applied the mandative tools differentially.
