Abstract: the article is devoted to the synonymity as one of the categories characterizing the semantics of any professional argot. The analysis of synonyms allowed the author to reveal the structure and length of the synonymic line and prove that systemic and sporadic mechanisms of word creation contribute to the synonymic block formation. The synonymic substitution is viewed as a leading wordformation source for increasing synonymic potential in professional argots.
