Abstract: linguists' contemporary attitude to the manipulation problem is analyzed in the article. The rhetorical approach to this phenomenon must be based on the genre standards; according to the author, the universal characteristics of manipulation which may be applicable to all kinds of discourse do not exist.

Key words: manipulation, emotional argumentation, forms of speech influence, objective and biased information, motives and intensions of speech, evaluation criteria of argumentation permissibility.
