Abstract: the paper deals with the cognitive potential of a metaphor in its evolution. Metaphorical nominations of the «state» actualized in the Russian prose of XVIII–XXI centuries are analyzed as concept pairs, chains, beams, clusters. The author concludes that conceptual and metaphorical levels of the concept «state» are of isomorphic structure.
Key words: cognition, literary text, concept structure, metaphor, cognitive mapping.
