Abstract. The article is devoted to research of a communicative aspect of Russian proverbs in the model "Meaning ↔ Application" that is based at supposition about their triple nature. The aim was to identify the communicative and pragmatic properties of Russian proverbs and their potential to be used by a speaker as an argument or counter-argument in some situations. The material for the study were Russian proverbs that were collected in V.I. Dahl Dictionary and viewed as embedded in the text / discourse of a work of art or independent communicative acts. The methodological basis of the research is a combination of methods, in particular, methods of observation, comparison, interpretation, synthesis, sentence analysis with regard to a reference situation analysis presented in the internal proverb form, as well as a discourse analysis, including interpretation of the proverb meanings and their pragmatic properties that are hidden in the context of communicative situations. It helps to characterize models of communicative behavior as a presentation of the subject against the background of some other subjects of the communicative situation. This approach is thought to be efficient in discovering functional value of the proverbs in adjusting communication by means of characterizing the other participant. Being used for implementing some tactics in communicative acts the proverb with its hidden intentions becomes a means of correction relations between speakers. The approach chosen in this research opens the way for clarifying the subject matter and dividing the proverbs into thematic and structural-logical groups and enlarging knowledge on Russian paremiological discourse, thus lessening the chance of their misinterpretations.
