Abstract. The paper is devoted to the research of modern colloquial reductions which reflect the changes in American English referring to the tendency of simplification of the language. In modern fiction such words and combinations mark the situations of informal speech. They bring emotiveness and expressiveness to the language of fiction and can characterize the speech of definite social groups of the modern society. On the other hand, these language units make the translations of fiction into other languages more difficult. The comparative analysis of the languages of the original novel The Client by J. Grisham and its Russian translation demonstrates the ways of translating modern English colloquial reductions with Americanisms wanna, gonna, gotta, outta, buncha, coupla, kinda, lemme, etc. by the linguistic means of another language. It is revealed that the translation of American colloquial reductions into the Russian language is made with the help of lexico-semantic (substitution, generalization, holistic transformation) and lexico-grammatical (antonymic translation, deletion) transformations. Lexical substitutions of colloquial reduction by stylistically neutral and low colloquial vocabulary are used more often. It is stated that lexical substitution of English colloquialisms by low colloquial Russian vocabulary is the most effective one as it helps not only to achieve translation adequacy but also to preserve the expressiveness of the fictional text.
Key words: colloquial reduction, modern American fiction, modern English, translation, translation transformations.
