Abstract: the article differentiates functional specifics of lexal connotations in the Russian literary language of the 18th c. on the opposition of "bookish :: spoken" lexemes; the author characterizes stylistic norms of official written communication on the basis of co-occurrence of bookish, official, and colloquial lexical means in the documents of Tsaritsin town council.
