Abstract: the article examines the main causes of ambiguity in the domain "names of rhetorical genres". The following reasons of such situation these reasons are the transition from the colloquial speech into institutional, belonging of one and the same genre to different private rhetorics, the emergence of associations that distort the original purpose of the genre.
