Abstract: the article investigates linguistic and discourse representation of some prototypic features of the devil which are explicated in English folk tale discourse as properties of most mythological characters. The author interprets the cases of direct identification of English mythological characters with the devil and the cases of substitution of conventional nominations of mythological characters for the nominations devil (devilkin) and demon.
