Abstract: this paper studies the use of harmonizing tactics by communicants of the higher and lower classes in business conversations in the late 19th – early 20th century. The study of fiction material showed that there are a) substantial differences in the verbal behavior of different classes of communicants; b) a set of stereotyped etiquette tactics for business communication of the time.
