Abstract: the article deals with the semantic structure of modal verbs in a directive speech act. The author differentiates peculiarities of modal verbs, considers the frequency of modal verbs usage in a directive speech act, determines the role of a modal verb while forming illocution, and analyses communicative
and speech strategies specific to directive speech acts.
Key words: deontic modality, directive speech act, modal verb, semantic structure of a modal verb, communicative-speech strategies.
