Abstract: the article represents an attempt of the complex intonation analysis on the basis of the languages of different morphological types. The author describes in detail the history of the theme, paying particular attention to intonation universals, taxonomic methods, analyzes the arguments pro and contra. The author advances his own concept of intonation universals, based on differentiation of universal, group, national and individual features of intonation.
