Abstract: the investigation of appellativized units in their functional aspect gives an opportunity to specify the criteria of synonymic differentiation, pointing out the criterion of the inner form of a word. The article dwells on the idea that the aforementioned units can be used as synonyms of different types, and namely, stylistic, semantic-stylistic, semantic and evaluative-stylistic ones.
