Abstract: the paper analyzes some of the issues in understanding and typologizing ethnonyms that contemporary linguistics faces. Considering the extralinguistic and linguistic factors, the authors offer a typology of ethnonyms that reflects parts of the linguistic world image of Russian Germans.
