Abstract: the paper deals with the periphrastic singularities typical for English mass media texts. Four cognitive-semantic models of the periphrastic nominations are distinguished: metaphorical, metonymical, allusive and euphemistic. Periphrasis with the use of precedent names is considered as a special kind.
