Abstract: the article presents the problem of geographical place names of settlements and their functioning in different historical periods in texts of regional newspapers. The names of settlements in the Volgograd Region and Stalingrad Region are taken as a case study. The authors determine the semantic and functional potential of oikonims within a thematic group "small settlements" in the texts of regional printed media.
