Abstract: the article deals with the inter-categorial links between the functional and semantic categories of modality and personality. Based on "The Lady with the Dog" and "The Dull Story" stories by A.P. Chekhov, the article describes the mechanism of functional correlation between these categories used in the text of fiction and demonstrates the functional row-position of their explicators.
