Abstract. The paper concerns lexical and phraseological units denoting land plots, as well as concepts and processes related to them. The study is based on the material taken from the "Dictionary of Russian Dialects in the Republic of Mordovia." Nominative processes which reflect the ways of naming a fact of social and cultural significance are identified. It has been established that Russian dialects frequently employ nouns that refer to land plots based on their belonging, size, shape, intended use, and cultivation characteristics, as well as their relationship to an object (house, estate, settlement, etc.). The study has revealed that this group also includes other names directly related to land use. These names include nouns denoting units of area and plot length measurement, as well as human designations in relation to land plots. A small group consists of adjectives that characterize and evaluate the properties of land plots, and verbs that describe actions associated with the use of various lands. Linguistic units in this thematic group constitute one of the most ancient and stable parts of the vocabulary of Russian vernaculars, reflecting human exploration of the real world and the practical use of the environment. They implement the principle of localism as one of the most important components of human speech.
