Abstract. The article is devoted to the study of modal and temporal meaning of future tense in the modern English language. The author analyses different points of view of scientists and suggests some ideas concerning the status of future tense category. The author makes conclusion that the temporal meaning of the future is common for all means of expressing the future tense semantics and represents specific base for the formation of new modal shades of future tense meaning.
