Abstract: the article deals with the analysis of verbal vocabulary of Russian language in terms of semantic laws. The material used in the analysis demonstrates the processes of extension or contraction of verb semantics and turning verb meanings into their opposite. In a number of cases the appropriate etymological material is used to explain the historical changes in the semantic structure of words.
